Last year we were asked to show students the glitz and glamour of small business (and sometimes not so) in the Entrepreneurship Class at Carleton University taught by the delightful Stephen Davies.
When I walked into the classroom, late (because they built a new building called the Canal Building which I thought was the River Building) I felt like I was walking into a room full of people much younger than me. I had not been out of school very long but very quickly felt old. Other businesses were taking part, Liz Lance of Ingenuity Group and a few others from the Lead to Win ecosystem.
The students were in the their final year of University and eager to learn as well as share their expertise. Videotelephony and the Carleton University students worked together to help Videotelephony and acted as marketing consultants.
The uniting factor for them all was their interest in Entrepreneurship which is the course they are all taking. The set up works in a way that the students learn things in class about business practice and then try to apply it to Videotelephony. We looked at Business Models, use of CRMs, we examine the goals and values of the company, mission statements, do a Blue Ocean Analysis as well as some other charts and processes that the students are well versed in.
The various backgrounds of the students bring a lot to the table. They were all able to contribute different ideas and some new things I never even knew about. They all have marketing skills and I learn something new from them every week. Working with the students is something I look forward to because I get to go to class (and pretend to be young again) and learn about all the new concepts they are learning at Carleton. Being a Carleton Alumni I really do enjoying returning to the old haunt. Mind you it wasn’t as easy to get around in my day.
This week they are doing a full analysis of the company giving Videotelephony marketing suggestions to help the video company itself grow and change with the ever evolving world of social media marketing. I will write about their suggestions and include that in the second blog post!
Videotelephony is a media company that works with video and webcasting and I was able to impart industry knowledge on the students as well as learn from them.
Check out these photos! One of the students was missing that day but we’ve added them in one of the photos, can you spot them? The students are JP, Ariel, Nic, Rebecca, Erin, Andrew, Matt and Rob. I am grateful for them all and know they will be making waves once they get into the working world!
